About Newcastle University

Newcastle serves as a significant hub for education. The University of Newcastle upon Tyne was established in 1937 as King’s College through the merger of Armstrong College and the College of Medicine, both of which were part of the University of Durham. The university maintained its connection with Durham until 1963, when it received its own charter and became known as the University of Newcastle. Additional educational opportunities are provided by the Municipal College of Technology, Rutherford College of Technology, and a college of education. The Royal Grammar School, founded during Henry VIII’s reign (1509–47), was incorporated in 1600, while Dame Allan’s School was endowed in 1705. The Museum of Antiquities, affiliated with the university, and the Society of Antiquities house significant Roman and other archaeological finds. The Museum of Science and Technology showcases the region’s industrial history, and the Hancock Museum preserves collections from various natural history societies.
